Acne is a skin disease common among adolescents but can affect adults as well. Acne can appear on the face, neck, chest, back, and upper arms. Acne develops when naturally-occurring skin oils, along with dead skin cells, clog hair follicles and/or pores in the skin. The clogged pores create an ideal environment for bacteria on the skin, which exacerbates pimples, whiteheads and the other symptoms of acne. Acne affects men and women of all races.
Actinic Keratosis can also be known as solar or senile keratosis. Actinic Keratosis appear as scaly, rough, flesh colored to pink patches on the skin, usually on areas that see excessive sun exposure. They typically appear on the face, ears, neck, lips, forearms and the back of the hands. Actinic Keratosis considered a precancerous skin condition.
Age spots are commonly known as "liver spots" or "sun spots" and can range in size and in color from light brown to black. They appear on the skin where it is frequently exposed to the sun. The older you are, and the more sun exposure you have, the more likely age spots will occur. Age spots appear most often where the skin is repeatedly exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, neck, exposed scalp, and arms. Alopecia is an autoimmune skin disease that results in the loss of hair on the body because the body’s own immune system is attacking hair follicles. There are three types of alopecia:
Alopecia areata – skin loses hair in round sections of varying size
Alopecia areata totalis – complete loss of hair on the scalp alone
Alopecia areata universalis – loss of hair everywhere on the body
Athlete’s foot is fungal infection and a form of ring worm that affects the skin between the toes. This form is contagious and can be spread to toe nails and hands. Athlete’s foot impacts men and women of all ages and races, athletes and non-athletes. You may experience itching, stinging and burning between your toes and also the soles of your feet. Often, symptoms will include blisters on the feet, cracking and peeling of the skin or discolored, thick and crumbly toe nails.
Basal cell carcinomas can present on your skin in varying forms including growths or lesions as red patches of skin, pink growths, open sores and shiny bumps. Basal cell carcinomas are commonly caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Basal cell carcinomas are rarely life-threatening when treated properly.
Bed bugs are blood-feeding insects whose bite can cause allergic reactions and skin rashes. They measure approximately 1/5 of an inch and are red/brown in color and wingless. Bed bugs are usually nocturnal. The preferred environment for bed bugs is a warm location, like the type found in or near beds. Typically, a bed bug bite is small, less than ¼” in size and may be either flat or slightly elevated. Bed bug bites usually result in reddening of the skin, swelling and itching.
Candidiasis is the medical term for yeast infections in the body. There are three forms of candidiasis:
- Oral Candidiasis (Oral Thrush)
- Diaper Rash Candidiasis
- Candidal Intertrigo
Contact dermatitis is an itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance or an allergic reaction to it. The rash isn't contagious, but it can be very uncomfortable. Many substances can cause this reaction, such as cosmetics, fragrances, jewelry and plants.
A cyst is a broad term for a fluid, semi-fluid filled, or keratin containing sac that occurs within skin tissue and can appear anywhere on the body. Some cysts are tiny, while others, if left untreated, can become cosmetically or functionally significant.

Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin.
Keloids is a condition that usually occurs after a skin related injury. A layer of scar forms near the healed injury, producing a scar. It is common to get keloids from trauma incidents to your skin like burns, cuts or even after chicken pox. It is important to seek keloid treatment if you have scars that are burning or itching
Lichen Planus is an inflammatory condition of the skin that affects many people. It commonly appears as small bumps or a rash over certain areas of the body including, but not limited to the trunk, wrists, ankles, and the inside of the mouth. It can also affect the appearance of fingernails and toenails in some cases. Lichen planus often causes bumps that are shiny, firm, and reddish purple in color.
Lupus occurs when the immune system, which normally helps protect the body from infection and disease, attacks its own tissues. This attack causes inflammation, and in some cases permanent tissue damage, which can be widespread – affecting the skin, joints, heart, lung, kidneys, circulating blood cells, and brain.
Melanoma is a dangerous type of skin cancer that occurs in melanocytes, which are the cells that produce the skin pigment known as melanin. Though melanocytes are usually found in the skin, they are also present in the bowel, the eyes, and other areas of the body; however, the risk of melanoma in these areas is very low, compared to that of the skin.
Molluscum are smooth, pearly, flesh-colored skin growths caused by a virus. They begin as small bumps and may grow as large as a pencil eraser. Many have a central pit where the virus bodies live. Usually, molluscum can be itchy and the skin around the growths may become infected. The bumps usually last from two weeks to one and a half years, and can go away by themselves. The molluscum may be passed from person to person by direct contact.
Nail fungus is a fungal infection that develops under the body’s nails, either in the toes or fingers. The fungi that cause the development of nail fungus are microscopic organisms that thrive in warm, moist environments.
Pemphigus is a disease that causes blistering of the skin and the inside of the mouth, nose, throat, eyes, and genitals.
Pityriasis rosea is a rash that often begins as an oval spot on the face, chest, abdomen or back. This is called a herald patch and may be up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) across.
Caused by an abnormality in the immune system, Psoriasis is a non-contagious skin condition that causes the increased production of new skin cells. Unable to shed the old skin cells quickly enough, the patient’s skin accumulates these dead cells on the skin’s surface.
Rosacea is a facial skin condition which can result in redness, flushing, prominent blood vessels and acne like lesions. There is no cure for rosacea.
Roughly 300,000 people in the United States suffer from scleroderma. This chronic connective tissue disease results from an over-production of collagen in the skin and other organs. Scleroderma usually appears in people between the ages of 25 and 55. Women get scleroderma more often than men. The disease worsens slowly over years.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that mainly affects your scalp. It causes scaly patches, inflamed skin and stubborn dandruff. It usually affects oily areas of the body, such as the face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids and chest.
Also known as seborrheic verruca, most people will develop at least one seborrheic keratosis during a lifetime. Fortunately, these lesions are benign and don’t become cancerous. They are characterized as brown, black or yellow growths that grow singly or in groups and are flat or slightly elevated. Often they are mistaken for warts
Shingles is a viral infection that forms a line of blisters and is usually uncomfortable or painful. The cause of shingles is believed to be the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. Anyone who has had chickenpox also has the varicella-zoster virus, which remains dormant in nerve endings, except for its outbreak as shingles.

A common skin growth in which a short, narrow stalk sticks out. Skin tags are usually harmless and painless. The main symptom is a growth on the skin, often on the neck, upper chest, underarms, and eyelids.

Pityriasis versicolor, also known as tinea versicolor, is a common, benign, superficial fungal infection of the skin. Clinical features of pityriasis versicolor include either hyperpigmented or hypopigmented finely scaled macules. The most frequently affected sites are the trunk, neck, and proximal extremities.

Hives is a common skin rash triggered by many things including certain foods, medications, and stress. Symptoms include itchy, raised, red, or skin-colored welts on the skin's surface.

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus and are contagious. They can appear as small, rough bumps, or pink, grey or flesh colored bumps that can grow anywhere on the skin. Warts are usually not painful, but visible warts are unsightly and embarrassing to most people.
The medical term for dry skin is xerosis. Xerosis refers to abnormally dry skin or membranes, such as those found in the mouth or the conjunctiva of the eye.
